among giants

You can make a difference.

Risking injury and incarceration, an environmental activist disrupts the clear-cutting of an ancient redwood grove by sitting on a tiny platform a hundred feet up in the tree canopy. Already three years into the tree-sit when filming begins, AMONG GIANTS blends vérité cinematography with intimate personal reflection to remarkable effect.

This film was shot and edited in 2011, and a year later, the tree-sit ended as a victory for the tree-sitters (indybay.org/newsitems/2012/06/26/18716373.php) As of 2013, negotiations are still underway for the sale of the land, and the exact acreage is still being determined.

Huge thanks to “Farmer,” “Bingmouse,” “Amanita,” and the rest of the tree-sitters for allowing us to live with them and film their story. Learn more about their work, donate, and see what they’re up to now: efhumboldt.org

miniature melbourne

Help me I’m shrinking.

A short tilt-shift time-lapse film featuring the city of Melbourne, Australia. This piece is 10 months in the making and features a range of different events and festivals held in the city throughout the year.

Music: “Reflections” by Tom Day. Big thanks to Tom for his sound effects and audio mix soundcloud.com/tomday

Equipment: Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 17-40mm f/4L, 24-105mm f/4L and 70-300mm f/4-5.6 USM

The tilt-shift effect and grading was applied in Photoshop, and the film was edited in After Effects and Premiere Pro CS6.

Most of the shots were captured from the Eureka Skydeck, which is a lookout at the top of Melbourne’s tallest building. Other locations were the Shrine of Remembrance memorial, car parks and bridges around the city.

bear71

Everyone wants to see a grizzly bear. But, of course, no one wants to be killed by one.

The life of a grizzly in a Canadian national park from the perspective of data points and surveillance cameras presents a fascinating look at what it means to be wild in this interactive film from the NFB.

From the moment it’s tagged and collared by park rangers to it’s death. The story is verbally told from the bear’s perspective but seen from the perspective of the many surveillance cameras surrounding the park.

I guess it’s kinda like surveillance everywhere. It’s partly there to protect you, and partly to protect others from you.

Dark,crisp and refreshing.

Matray created this high impact opening for a TV show. Apparently the client deemed the intro “inappropriate” and it was never aired. Appropriate or not it’s a stunning piece of work and well worth watching. He recently wrote and directed Alt-J “mathilda” Videoclip for the genero.tv contest : genero.tv/alt-j/videos
