Experimental French director acclaimed for his post-apocalyptic film La Jetée

The essay film, a form pitched between documentary and personal reflection, exploring the subjectivity of the cinematic perspective, has now become an accepted genre. Jean-Marie Straub, Danièle Huillet, Jean-Luc Godard, Errol Morris and Michael Moore are among its main recent exponents, but Chris Marker, who has died aged 91, was credited with inventing the form.

Marker’s creative use of sound, images and text in his poetic, political and philosophical documentaries made him one of the most inventive of film-makers. They looked forward to what is called “the new documentary”, but also looked back to the literary essay in the tradition of Michel de Montaigne. Marker’s interests lay in transitional societies – “life in the process of becoming history,” as he put it. How do various cultures perceive and sustain themselves and each other in the increasingly intermingled modern world?

to build a home

There is a house built out of stone
Wooden floors, walls and window sills
Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust
This is a place where I don’t feel alone
This is a place where I feel at home

character – recycling typography

Why should they be demolished?

“We choose the letters that have character, take them, replace the old neon tubes with LED’s, check that they are ok and put them on our website”, says Aleksi Hautamäki, one of the founders of the Finnish company called Character, which recycles the signs to be used as individual letters. “These pieces of typography are all unique design objects, why should they be demolished?”

the origin of creatures

mutated limbs are looking for cooperation,

A futuristic vision of a world after a catastrophic disaster. In this dark parable mutated limbs are looking for cooperation, but due to miscommunication this mission is doomed to fail.

The storyline of The Origin of Creatures is based on one of the most well-known tales about collaboration, the Tower of Babel. This tale is transformed and twisted and is set in an imaginary future, after the world is hit by a catastrophe. Among the remains of a devastated city lives that what is left of humanity. Human bodies are divided into separated parts of the body and are fused to special beings. Together, these creatures form a colony, they can only survive when collaborating. In the rubble of destroyed buildings they are trying to build a nest as large and as high as possible, so that the colony’s queen gets enough sunlight to reproduce, but due to miscommunication this mission is doomed to fail.

Influences: Radiohead, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana Veteran House Music Producer J-Punch is constantly re-inventing what it is to re-invent one’s self. After several years of thriving in the underground dance music community, having released dozens of tracks through some of the world’s best dance music record labels [System, Global Underground], and having spearheaded one of Washington D.C.’s most successful weekly house music events, Pulse, for over 100 weeks, J-Punch has decided to scientifically engineer a new genre of music.Enlisting the aid of his ghostly writing partner, Dave Moonshine, J-Punch has infused and ensorcelled what would otherwise be known as “Down-Tempo” EDM with abstract and contemplative lyrics that would normally be considered “Alternative Rock”. The duo haphazardly refer to this style as “Alt-Tempo” (or “Down-Rock” if you nasty).J-Punch has been at it for years. He has conquered masses, vanquished impossible odds, and reached the collective unconscious of millions. Yet, at his heart, he is just like the rest of us.
